When Matt had got back in the early hours of the morning from the break-in at the barn, I was still wide awake. Racked with guilt over what I’d done with Daniel. I couldn’t let anything like that happen again. I’d never once in all our married life even looked at another man in the way I’d looked at Daniel. No other man had never ignited such a physical and emotional response from me. I wasn’t trying to make excuses for myself, I was the one wholly responsible for my own actions, but it was as if Daniel had the power to bend me to his will.

‘Sorry, didn’t mean to wake you,’ said Matt as he stripped off and went into the en suite for a wash. He emerged a few minutes later after a splash of water and quick brush of his teeth. He flopped down into bed.

‘Was everything all right?’

‘Yeah. Waste of effort though,’ said Matt. ‘I got there, and the police hadn’t even bothered to stick around. I had to secure the door myself. Managed to book a locksmith for the morning.’

‘Did you speak to the police again?’

Matt was already lying back with his eyes closed. ‘That’s the weirdest thing. They didn’t have any record of phoning me. Honestly, this country is unbelievable. It’s times like this I wish I was back in Australia.’

‘Like there’s no crime in Australia,’ I said.

‘We should move there.’ His words were heavy, and I wasn’t sure whether he was just thinking out loud. But then he propped himself up on one elbow and looked at me. ‘I’m being serious, babe. Maybe once this project is complete, we should think about moving home. We’d have enough money, and our standard of living would be better. Think of all the opportunities for Declan.’

‘Wow. That’s a sudden about-turn. I thought you and Daniel Sully were embarking on a business venture together.’

‘We are. It’s a one-off though. Anyway, I was thinking in the car on the way home that he might be interested in investing in some overseas ventures.’

‘Matt,’ I said, interrupting him before he got carried away. ‘You know how I feel about emigrating. I couldn’t leave Mum. I don’t know how much time I have left with her; I’m not moving to the other side of the world where it could be a year before I see her again. She’s not getting any younger.’

‘Hasn’t it occurred to you that I feel the same about my mum?’

That was a curveball. Matt had never given the slightest indication he missed his own mother. ‘I didn’t know that,’ I said. ‘I’m sorry.’

‘Yeah, well, it’s not all about you. Don’t forget I have feelings too.’

‘I know. It’s just you’ve never in all the time I’ve known you said you felt homesick or anything,’ I replied. ‘And, not being funny, but you chose to move to the UK. Moving to Australia has never been on my wish list.’

He flopped back down. ‘Didn’t think you’d understand.’

‘That’s unfair.’

‘Probably the wrong time to talk about this.
